‘Urbanism in an Age of Austerity’ proposal submitted

Following a fourth months productive collaboration among EU and international partners, the ‘Urbanism in an Age of Austerity’ proposal was submitted to the EC on January 31, 2013. (See more at http://www.sarcha-architecture.blogspot.gr/2012/10/urbanism-in-age-of-austerity-uaaahrc.html ).

A dedicated SARCHA team worked in difficult weather conditions in Athens, since most of the buildings had no central heating this year due to austerity measures.(see photo).

We expect to hear from the EC at the end of spring; If successful the proposal will run for 42 months (see above time-diagram) and open calls for the involvement of SARCHA associates will be launched accordingly and in due time.

Under the joint direction of UWA’s Associate Professor Nigel Westbrook and the architect Ms Kalliope Kontozoglou, (a SARCHA associate and member of the advisory board http://www.sarcha.gr/About.aspx ), the students produced imaginative proposals. On What We Can Not Do: SARCHA invites you to think it through today

An Invitation to a Greek stasis

On the occasion of A. Merkel’s official visit in Athens (9/10/2012), this invitation is addressed to Greeks and their friends worldwide

for 5 min 18.00-18.05 (athens time) to stand up wherever they are and think in silence and immobility how the place they stand and the life they conduct have been shaped by forces they cannot understand far more control.

It is the things that we decide we CAN or we CAN NOT do that make up our human potentiality
and as it appears, it has been swept away by the markets’ demand for flexibility.

Greeks and their friends can stand in silence and start counting down the time of the ‘I can do it all’.

(An invitation based on G. Agamben’s text “On What We Can Not Do”)

***

(Mια πρόσκληση βασισμένη στο κείμενο του G. Agamben “On What We Can Not Do”)

Beyond the constraints of reality: SARCHA at the Bartlett MArch Urban Design final crits

image: Jiang Nanchen’s proposal for the transformation of an Athens city-center block into a productive unit by introducing the ‘industry’ of olive trees from cultivation to the production of food, wood and oil.

It was refreshing to review projects beyond the constraints of reality designed by the Bartlett MArch UD students following their trip in Athens in January 2012 and their collaboration with SARCHA on the staging of the Polypolis game in the London Festival of Architecture – Cultural Olympiad, June 2012. On August 28-30, 2012, Maria Theodorou joined the final crits of Unit 2 (tutors Robert Dye and Jason Coleman) and Unit 3 (Nicholas Boyarsky and Camila Sotomayor) of Bartlett’s MArch Urban Design 2011-12 (director Colin Fournier) and entertained the possibility to see and discuss the 20 imaginative proposals in Athens in the context of SARCHA’s co-fertilization with architecture schools from abroad in the coming year.
